The art of batching, A Wellbeing Coaches guide

The one practice that improved my focus.

I was always an advocate for multitasking aka getting a load of shit done as quickly as possible!

Yet I'd feel exhausted and make mistakes because I wasn't focused on the task.

Let me introduce you to batching...

Batching is more than cooking up a load of meals for the week!

It’s about Focusing On One Thing - what I call the FOOT method.

I’m doing it right now, as I’m writing this blog post, all I’ve done this afternoon for a couple of hours is think up topics for y blog and write out a few.

This way I’m only focusing on being creative - aka having fun writing up content.

I do this with my newsletter and social media content. I have a dedicated day per month for each of these tasks.

This way I stay focused, I get into my zone of genius and once they are done I don’t have to think about them until I’ve next scheduled them in my diary.

Because I was used to multitasking for years it took a while to get into the batching flow.

Here’s a few tips to help get you started:

1 - start with what feels EASY

Look at your to do list and decide what feels like the easiest/quickest task to get done. Focus on that first and allow more time for the more complicated tasks.

2 - give yourself TIME

When I started batching it felt like I was doing more, however within a month I had my flow down. I could see that everything was getting done and had an allocated check in date per month to focus on the next batching session.

3 - try the pomodoro technique

If you get distracted easily or ideas and other tasks ping into your mind. Pause and write them down, then get on with the task at hand.

Stay focused on the task with the pomodoro technique - set a timer for 25 minutes and work on 1 task. When the timer goes off set a 5 minute timer - this is your time to stretch, go to the loo, pop the laundry on aka do something completey different to give your mind a rest. At the end of the 5 minutes return to your task and set another 25 minute time.

Repeat this cycle for a max of 3 times aka 90 minutes of 3 x 25 minute work focus sessions and 3 x 5 minute breaks.

At the end of the 90 minutes you’ll either have completed the task or it’s time to put it to one side and focus on something else.
